PA Department Of Agriculture Confirms First Case Of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza In Lancaster County
No Public Health Risk For Pennsylvanians
LANCASTER COUNTY, Pennsylvania – The United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal Health and Plant Inspection Service has detected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses in a commercial poultry flock in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County.
The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners support the farmers and farms that have been impacted by HPAI. Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency is working to support the Federal and State partners in their joint incident response. HPAI does not present an immediate public health concern to humans.
HPAI is an extremely infectious and fatal form of the disease for chickens. We encourage all kinds of bird owners to practice good biosecurity and increase surveillance of flock health to protect their birds. For assistance in creating a biosecurity plan for your facility please go to The Penn State University Extension site or the PA Department of Agriculture site.
If you suspect your flock has been exposed to the HPAI virus, please call the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture at 717‐772‐2852.
HPAI can be devastating to the agriculture and farming community. The threat of HPAI may be stress inducing. Penn State Extension is also bringing awareness of mental health concerns in the agriculture community. For more information, please look at the Penn State Extensions resources below:
